Song of the Day: "As Long as I Have You," the Detroit Cobras

Rowdy garage-rockers tackle a classic soul tune.

The razor-sharp garage rock of the Detroit Cobras, fronted by Rachel Nagy on vocals and Mary Ramirez on guitar, typically conjures up images of black leather jackets, motorcycles and tattoos. Today's song reveals a slightly different side of the band, as the Cobras coil themselves around Garnet Mimms' 1964 Philly soul classic, "As Long as I Have You." The band keeps the eerie minor-key vibe of Mimms' original, but the addition of some slashing guitars and Nagy's tough-girl vocals ensures this performance, taken from the band's new "Tried and True" disc, rises above the level of mere homage. If you can, check out Mimms' original version; it's an underappreciated classic.
