Dismayed by the prospect of plodding through a typical, boring 9-to-5 job, Shawna Kenney, a freelance writer, a photographer and an editor of Whap! magazine, answered an ad in Washington's free weekly City Paper for a dominatrix. For three and a half years she put herself through American University spanking the butts of lawyers, lobbyists and politicians at $300 a pop.
Her ballsy, comic memoir, "I Was a Teenage Dominatrix," recounts her experience as both a professional dominatrix (named "Mistress Alexis") and a communications major. One might expect raunchy sex scenes galore, but as a story about Kenney in Salon noted: "Though there are plenty of naughty bits, the memoir doesn't dwell on them. Instead, the reader follows a 19-year-old punk-rock refugee from the Maryland sticks to the big city."
In case you were wondering, Kenney graduated from American University in 1995.
