There was a time, not so long ago, when you had to be somewhat famous to get ink for your meltdown. You must have starred in a movie or appeared on the Mickey Mouse Club for people to genuinely give two rips about your crazy. Otherwise, if all we wanted was just run-of-the-mill crazy, we could just take a stroll underneath the highway. Lots of crazy up for grabs there.
This, however, is no longer the case. Today, a seriously unhinged woman (playwright Tricia Walsh Smith) makes national news for posting a YouTube video in which she vents the gnarly details of her upended marriage. They never had sex. His daughter is evil. It's a tearful, vicious rant, the kind of scene you see in movies but (if you're lucky) rarely up-close. Today, I can give you a link: It's right here.
Though the scorned and impulsive have been unraveling online for years now, this video is being called "the first YouTube divorce." According to a CNN story today:
"This is absolutely a new step, and I think it's scary," said Bonnie Rabin, a divorce lawyer who has handled high-profile cases. "People used to worry about getting on Page Six [the gossip page of the New York Post]. But this? It brings the concept of humiliation to a whole new level."
Yeah, but whose humiliation are we talking about? This is a sad video. It's sad that I watched it. (But I couldn't stop myself!) Ladies and gentlemen, do us all a favor: Put away your camera for a little while. Take a breather. Seriously, what was so wrong with "Dear Diary"?
