If anything is clear so far tonight, it's that, in a big turnout election, both sides got the vote out, but the old saw that more voters would be good for the Democrats has turned out to be false. With a three million vote lead in the popular vote, George W. Bush has turned that piece of popular political lore on its head.
President George W. Bush is now projected by TV networks to win Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, South and North Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah Arkansas, Missouri, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, Arizona and Alaska. Sen. John Kerry is projected to win New Hampshire, Michigan, Hawaii, Minnesota, California, Oregon, New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Illinois, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and Maine.
Ohio has been called by Fox News and NBC, but at 2:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, CNN continued to label Ohio too close to call.
Still to be called: Wisconsin, Nevada, New Mexico, and Iowa.
Current vote totals, as of 2:30 Eastern Standard Time had Kerry leading a hair Wisconsin. Bush leads in New Mexico, Iowa, and Nevada.
