Biden's son decides not to run for Senate

Beau Biden's decision all but hands Republicans another pickup in this year's elections

Last week was a bad one for Democrats. They need this one to be better, especially with President Obama's first State of the Union coming up Wednesday. But it hasn't started out well.

Beau Biden -- son of Joe, and Delaware's attorney general -- announced Monday morning that he won't be running for Senate this year, and will be running for reelection to his current post instead. That leaves state Democrats without a viable candidate. For the moment, Republican Rep. Mike Castle, a popular former governor, is all but assured of victory, and his party is all but certain to pick up another Senate seat.

It probably doesn't even need to be said, but this is a bitter blow for Democrats: Losing a Senate seat is bad enough in any case. But in the span of two weeks, it looks like they've lost seats formerly held by two big figures in their party, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy and Vice President Biden.
