Last week, the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives added a clause to the defense authorization bill explicitly prohibiting the use of any Defense Department money to buy a facility in the U.S. in which to house Guantánamo Bay detainees. Today, the Senate Armed Services Committee announces that it's done the same.
Sorry, White House! Congress will not allow you to even attempt to make a mostly symbolic gesture toward justice by transporting people being detained forever in legal limbo from an island to Illinois, where they will be detained forever in legal limbo.
