French fries are still called "Freedom Fries" in the House dining room, but Dennis Hastert has struck a blow in that other, more imaginary war back home. On orders of the Republican speaker of the House, that big Engelmann spruce that went up on the West Lawn of the Capitol yesterday shall be known as the Capitol Christmas Tree. "It was known as the 'Holiday Tree' for several years and just recently was changed back to the 'Capitol Christmas Tree,'" Capitol architect Matthew Evans tells the Times. "This was a directive from the speaker."
