Saying that military leaders have "lost trust and confidence" in his ability "to address needed solutions for soldier outpatient care," the Army has just announced that Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman has been relieved of his command of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
A story in the Washington Post today suggested that Weightman was informed of some of the problems with patient care when he took command of Walter Reed last summer. No word yet on any ramifications for Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley, who ran Walter Reed before becoming the Army's top medical officer. As Mark Benjamin reported in Salon earlier this week, Kiley was told about problems in the Army's outpatient medical care program more than two months ago but apparently took no action in response.
