It looks like Barack Obama picked a sadly auspicious day to make his big speech on Iraq. The big news out of that country today is that at least 35 Iraqi army recruits were killed and 63 were wounded when suicide bombers blew themselves up at an army base in Diyala province Tuesday morning.

According to the New York Times, Iraqi forces in Diyala are gearing up to move against anti-government guerrillas in an offensive similar to others that have been conducted in Iraq recently. Operations in Diyala may prove tougher, and deadlier, than the other recent offensives, however, the Times reports.
