According to Jonathan Martin of the Politico, the McCain campaign is pulling out of Michigan. It must realize that, with less than five weeks to go and its vice-presidential nominee sinking its grumpy nominee's candidacy, the campaign has little choice but to sink everything into holding Ohio and Florida.
McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.
McCain's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Here's the missing comment: McCain has to try to reconstruct the Bush 2004 map, maybe minus Iowa or even New Mexico, to scratch out a narrow win. (That would put him at 274, which is Bush-league, so to speak, but still a winning total.)
