Some surprising, and very happy, news today: According to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy's brain cancer is in remission.
Reid told The Hill that he's spoken with Kennedy's wife in the past few days and that the senator is "doing fine." Along with Sens. Tom Harkin and John Kerry, he also confirmed that Kennedy will return to the Senate after its Memorial Day recess in order to work on healthcare reform legislation.
Kennedy, who's been in office for close to 50 years now, was diagnosed in May of 2008. At the time, the Boston Herald reported this past weekend, doctors gave him only three months to live, at best.
Update: Unfortunately, it seems that Reid was wrong. Kennedy's office isn't talking, which the Associated Press takes as a disavowal of the majority leader's comments. The AP also reports that Reid spokesman Jim Manley has retracted his boss' comments about Kennedy's health.
"Sen. Reid will leave the diagnosing to doctors," Manley said. "But he does look forward to the prospect of Sen. Kennedy's return to the Senate as soon as he is able."
