Republicans are not about to let President Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress next week go unchallenged — not when it’s an attempt to restart the debate over healthcare reform on friendlier ground for him.
House Republican Leader John Boehner has asked the networks to provide time for a response from his party, ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos reports. Boehner reportedly pointed out that when then-President Clinton made a similar speech in 1993, Republicans gave a response then, and got airtime for it.
No word yet on who’ll be giving the address. Last time there was a response to be made, the task fell to a rising star in the party, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, but he flopped, and this isn’t a showcase sort of opportunity anyway.
