English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered by many to be the greatest dramatist the world has ever known and the finest poet who has written in the English language. Shakespeare has also been the world's most popular author. No other writer's plays have been produced so many times or read so widely in so many countries. Much of this popularity rests on his ability to communicate the intricacies of human nature.

Shakespeare's sonnets represent some of the finest poems ever penned. They are love poems of an extraordinary personal variety, giving us intimate glimpses of the soul behind the genius that was Shakespeare. Listen to this excerpt from the HarperAudio release "Shakespeare: The Sonnets" which features the late Sir John Gielgud's magnificent renderings of 120 of Shakespeare's sonnets.
