More bad news on the jobs front: With the expiration of a federal unemployment aid program, about 375,000 out-of-work Americans will run out of jobless benefits this month — and still won’t get a paycheck because they haven’t found work. Nearly two million unemployed workers will be in this situation during the first six months of 2004, according to a new report.

“In no other month on record — and in no other six-month period for which data are available — have so many unemployed workers exhausted their regular unemployment benefits without being able to receive additional aid.”
