Last month when I interviewed Britt Daniel, Spoon's singer, he mentioned Prince more often than any other artist. It occurred to me during that interview that Prince might be the stealth ingredient that makes Spoon's music so utterly different from the work of the hordes of other retro-heavy indie rock bands. Prince is there in the brittle jerkiness of the music, in the almost anal precision of it, in the machine-like way that all the instruments interlock -- all in ample evidence on "I Turn My Camera On," from Spoon's dazzling upcoming LP "Gimme Fiction."
