Over the Rhine's muted, wistful pop rock can be treacly or enchanting or, often, both. "Born" is from their new record "Drunkard's Prayer," the sparest, simplest they've ever made, recorded in their living room. Sweet and uncomplicatedly pretty as it may be, this melody is far too devastating, and too artfully sung by Karin Bergquist, for me to accuse it of treacle. Also available is the title track ("Drunkard's Prayer"), which might well be a nice song, but I can't bear to listen to it because of the dreadful digital keyboard sound.
