I'm regretting an earlier comment I made about the poor quality of the iTunes store's weekly free downloads, because they've hit a really good patch recently. This week's, "Come to Mama," by R&B singer Lina, is a delight. At its core, the song is standard-fare piano-based modern soul, but Lina has a lovely, relaxed sound and a nice sense of phrasing, and there are a few extra goodies: a beautifully harmonizing French chorus and, most important, a strange backdrop of woozy, watery synth sounds that give the whole song a magical air.
Lina's "Come to Mama"
Maybe these iTunes free downloads aren't so bad after all.
