There's a lot of talk about the brilliance of Joe Pernice's songwriting, but for me it's all about his voice. Pernice has written some great songs for sure (I'm partial to "Baby in Two" and "Our Time Has Passed"), and his melodies are always lovely (if not so consistently very memorable), but what really sets this band apart from the New Pornographers and the Shins and all those other power pop indie sweeties out there is Pernice's faded glory of a voice, so angelic and so delicate, which can take even a mundane melody and make it breathe sadness. "There Goes the Sun" is the opening track from the band's latest, "Discover a Lovelier You."
