Jason Moran is a powerhouse jazz pianist, a fire-breathing daredevil with a thunderous tone and a breathtaking technique, and while he hasn't shown himself to be as deft a composer or bandleader as he is as a player, he's still an exciting figure to watch. Moran's latest, "Same Mother," is the pianist's take on the blues, and like most of his recordings, it's a bit of a mixed bag. It's thrilling to hear him break loose for a few moments on "Jump Up," but guitarist Marvin Sewell adds nothing, and the gonzo boogie sound is a bit hokey.
