Plenty of bands these days are lacing their songs with ambient noise and electronics, stray bits of ear candy, dark intimations of an experimental impulse just beneath the surface, but it's unusual to hear those typically ancillary elements pushed so far to the front as they are on this song, and even more unusual to hear it succeed so brilliantly. "Mutant country," the band's label calls it, although Castanets have pushed country pretty far aside here, joining bands like Califone and Lambchop.
