Is Tom DeLay hearing footsteps?

House Republicans circulate a petition calling on their colleagues to elect a permanent replacement for the displaced majority leader.

The end just drew a little nearer for Tom DeLay. As Roll Call is reporting, a small group of "mostly moderate" Republicans in the House will begin circulating a petition today in which they call on their colleagues to elect a permanent replacement for the temporarily displaced majority leader.

The group will need the signatures of 50 Republican members to force an election; Roll Call says that more than a dozen have signed on already.

The face-saving race is on now: Will the petitioners get to 50, or will DeLay spare himself the embarrassment and relinquish any claim to his post first?
