To my eternal unhipness, I haven't yet acquired much of a taste for grime, hip-hop's cool British cousin. The indie-music press has been all agog over grime for the past few years, making for huge critical (if only modestly commercial) successes for Dizzee Rascal and for Vice Records' "Run the Road" compilation of some of the genre's best. But when I've tried to listen I've found the beats overcomplicated and tinny, anxious and grooveless. But "Get Set," produced by Low Deep and featuring grime all-star Kano along with Ghetto, Demon and Seac (and including the leadoff track from the recently released "Run the Road Volume 2"), is irresistible, with the same stuttering complexity, but exploding into glorious technicolor with synth strings scattering skyward, bending and undulating with sensuous pleasure.
