Reason for hope -- and a word of advice -- for the Democrats

Newt Gingrich proposes a campaign slogan: "Had enough?"

Published March 27, 2006 2:42PM (EST)

Today isn't Nov. 8, a lot can happen between now and then, and each side has an incentive for exaggerating the stakes, but Time magazine says it's hearing from "top strategists of both parties" that Republicans would "probably" lose control of the House of Representatives if the 2006 elections were held today.

Of course, there are still consultants to pay, platforms to adopt and middle roads to walk, and the Democrats have made an art over the years of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. If they want to avoid a return to the usual this time around, perhaps they'd do well to listen to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who tells Time that his party has bungled affairs so badly of late that the Democrats could win in 2006 simply by asking, "Had enough?"
