Susana Baca's latest, "Travesias," finds her accompanied by a brilliant band, held down by Marc Ribot (recently featured on Audiofile), but the focus, as it should be, is on the Afro-Peruvian singer's stunning voice: She sings with an extraordinarily smooth tone, touched with an almost subliminal rasp, and phrases with such grace and precision you immediately know you're listening to a master. On "Estrela," she duets with Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil.
