What New Orleans needs now is ... Laura Bush?

The first lady will visit the devastated city Wednesday.

This just in from the Office of the First Lady: Wednesday morning, Laura Bush will make remarks at Tulane University at a conference put on by the National Trust for Historic Preservation called "Rebirth: People, Places and Culture in New Orleans." Then, she'll take a museum tour over at the Historic New Orleans Collection on Royal Street.

Anything that can keep national attention focused on the beleaguered city of New Orleans as another hurricane season looms sounds good to us. Yet, is a museum tour really what's in order?

Mrs. Bush, after New Orleans, why not stop by Austin, Texas, to meet with a few of the thousands of displaced Katrina victims from New Orleans who are losing their FEMA housing benefits and face becoming homeless? Surely their bleak present is as compelling as New Orleans' storied past.
