It's hard to know what to make of "Multiply," the CD on which solo laptop artist and member of electronic duo Super Collider Jamie Lidell turns to soul, without any apparent trace of irony. The production is deft, polished and tasteful -- vintage, velvety soul with beautifully integrated bursts of electronic elaboration and airbrushing. Lidell is an unambiguously powerful vocalist in full command of the classic soul idiom, but even the whitest of blue-eyed soul is usually a bit more self-conscious about itself than this, and if you can listen to these tracks without a hint of bemusement, or even embarrassment, you're thicker skinned than I.
