When a radio talk show host asked Dick Cheney earlier this week about "dunking a terrorist in water" to save "American lives," we took it as a reference to "waterboarding." And when the vice president said that he considered the aforementioned "dunking" a "no brainer," well, we took it as an endorsement of the interrogatory "technique."
We take it all back.
We're not sure what Cheney was describing. Maybe the CIA has one of those carnival dunk tanks, and they get a terrorist suspect up there and give Cheney and Rumsfeld three balls for a quarter until the guy comes clean. But whatever it is that Cheney was calling a "no brainer" this week, it absolutely, positively wasn't waterboarding.
We know this because Tony Snow says so. As CNN reports, Snow says: "You know as a matter of common sense that the vice president of the United States is not going to be talking about water boarding. Never would, never does, never will. You think Dick Cheney's going to slip up on something like this? No, come on."
