This track is from "Plague Songs," a collection of ten songs based on the plagues in the book of Exodus, funded by a British arts organization and curated by Hal Willner, who brings in his usual stable of highfalutin' pop stars, including Laurie Anderson, Rufus Wainwright, Stephin Merritt and Brian Eno. In his interpretation of the plague of darkness, Scott Walker juxtaposes his unctuous croon against a jarringly harsh choir, accompanied by just a tambourine.
