Weekend Pick
A.M.P.A.S. / Michael Yada
Thanks to the end of the writers' strike, the big draw this weekend will be the "80th Academy Awards" (Sunday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC), airing in all of their bloated, self-congratulatory glory. Will Jon Stewart make us laugh? Will the best actress winner make us cry? Will it be better than the Hannah Montana tour? And most important, will the pre-show red-carpet fashion harpies keep us entertained, or just make us cringe? (Whatever happens, nothing can be more cringe-inducing than the custom-made Lisa Rinna and Joey Fatone bobbleheads that the TV Guide Channel sent us in the mail.) And don't miss the "Barbara Walters Oscar Special" (Sunday at 7 p.m EST on ABC; after the Oscars broadcast on the West Coast), which features an interview with Miley Ray Cyrus! (Oh, and also Harrison Ford, Ellen Page and Vanessa Williams.)
Also…
On Friday, the season finale of "Monk" airs at 9 p.m EST on USA, while "20/20" features some hidden-camera spying on people on the street as they make ethical decisions (9 p.m. EST on ABC). Woody Allen's "Manhattan" airs at 9 p.m. EST on TCM. On Saturday, the "Independent Spirit Awards" air at 5 p.m. EST on IFC, "Torchwood" airs at 9 p.m. EST on BBCA, and Guy Ritchie's "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" airs at 8 p.m. EST on Sundance. You can also catch Oscar-winners "Ordinary People" (10 p.m. on TCM) and "Platoon" (10:20 p.m. EST on Encore). On Sunday, Gus starts to investigate Sneaky Scott's reporting on "The Wire" (9 p.m. EST on HBO), while "Pride and Prejudice" concludes on "Masterpiece" (9 p.m. EST on PBS, check listings) and the first season of "Dexter" continues (only with a little less blood and gore than the Showtime original) at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
