Authorities in the northwestern Chicago suburb of Wonder Lake said a persistent house cat probably saved the lives of a couple in a house fire. Assistant Chief Mike Weber of the Wonder lake Fire Protection District said the fire broke out shortly after midnight Monday in the bedroom of a new home in an unincorporated area. Weber said the couple were asleep on the living room couch when their cat jumped up and began annoying the man, who finally woke up and smelled smoke. He called 911 after he could not put out the fire with a home extinguisher.
The couple, the cat, and a dog, managed to escape the fire unharmed, but Weber said it did an estimated $68,000 to the house.
