An Olympic gold medalist says the governing body of the U.S. swim team hasn't done enough to address widespread sexual abuse in youth swimming.
Deena Deardurff Schmidt, a 1972 Olympic champion swimmer, spoke out Friday in support of a lawsuit challenging the adequacy of background checks of coaches in the USA Swimming system.
A message left with USA Swimming wasn't immediately returned.
The suit initially was filed last year in Santa Clara County on behalf of a teenage girl who said she was molested by coach Andrew King. King is now serving a 40-year prison sentence for molestation.
The amended suit, filed Thursday, alleges more than 30 coaches nationwide have engaged in sexual misconduct. It includes allegations by Deardurff Schmidt that she was molested by her coach. He is not named in the suit.
