The magic nostalgia of the epic train ride

Slide show: These trips hark back to a time when travel was romantic -- and actually relaxing

Crowded, intrusive and increasingly undignified: However geographically liberating plane travel might be, you would be hard-pressed to find a modern-day traveler waxing poetic about the experience. An epic train ride, however, allows for a slow meditation on movement and momentum. It's an especially cinematic mode of transportation: the gradual unfolding of geographic transitions, the voyeurism of peeking into the disheveled backyards and backsides of forgotten railroad towns, and the pleasant passivity of being carried along and visually entertained from your seat.

These 14 train trips all plunge into places that most travelers fly over. You don't have to be a hardcore rail fan to travel like this, but you do need to slow down enough to let the process of getting somewhere be as important as arriving.
