NEW YORK (AP) — Advocates for the homeless in New York City fear that more unmarried and childless shelter seekers who say they have nowhere else to go will soon be left out on the streets.
The city has traditionally provided shelter to homeless single men and women with no questions asked.
But now officials want to interview them to determine if a shelter is truly their only option. It's a shift that critics worry could leave the city's most vulnerable individuals — many of them struggling with substance abuse and mental illness — without any help.
The City Council and the Legal Aid Society have gone to court to challenge the rules proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration. The city has delayed the rules while a judge reviews the case.
