MILWAUKEE (AP) — Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home is a testament to the architect's design philosophy, weaving innovative techniques into the existing landscape.
But the $200,000-a-year energy bill for the home known as Taliesin (tal-ee-ES'-in) West is unsustainable. So the National Historic Landmark located in Scottsdale, Ariz., will soon undergo environmentally friendly changes.
Sean Malone heads the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and spoke to The Associated Press about the plans before the official announcement.
He says Arizona companies are donating 4,000 solar panels for the campus, replacing 5,000 light bulbs across 30-odd buildings and making roofs and windows more energy-efficient.
He says Taliesin is already a role model of sustainable architecture, and the upgrades will make it a model of sustainable energy.
Officials say the property's historic designation and appearance won't be affected.
