Nasdaq Cracks 3,000, But Stocks Fall

The Nasdaq composite index touched 3,000 for the first time since 2000, but stocks are finishing lower.

The Dow is ending down 54 points at 12,952. On Tuesday, it closed above 13,000 for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is closing down seven points at 1,366.

The Nasdaq didn't hold 3,000 for long. It's finishing the day down 20 at 2,967.

Stocks still had their best February since 1998.

Volume was a little above average at 4.3 billion shares on the New York Stock Exchange. Declining stocks outnumbered advancers by about 2-to-1.
