LIMA, Peru (AP) — A brother of Peru's president who is serving a 19-year sentence for murder has been transfered from a maximum-security prison to a special lockup on a military base.
The transfer early Saturday was confirmed by prisons director Jose Perez in a radio interview.
He said Antauro Humala, a former army major, was moved for security reasons because Shining Path rebels were housed near him in Piedras Gordas prison and President Ollanta Humala's government recently captured their leader.
He did not respond to repeated phone calls from The Associated Press seeking details.
Antauro Humala led a 2005 attack on a provincial police post in which six people were killed. He was demanding the resignation of then-President Alejandro Toledo.
