SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — If Trayvon Martin's family sues over his death, they might not target the man who shot him, George Zimmerman. They may go after the homeowners association of the neighborhood where the shooting happened.
If Zimmerman's claim of self-defense under Florida's stand your ground law is upheld, he would be protected from a lawsuit. But that wouldn't prevent The Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowners association from being sued. And its insurance policies and assets could make it a much more lucrative target.
Roberto Blanch is an attorney who specializes in homeowners associations. He says a newsletter calling Zimmerman a neighborhood watch captain, and urging residents to call him if a crime is committed, could make the association vulnerable to a lawsuit.
Officials with the homeowners association couldn't be reached for comment.
