NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks closed mostly higher Tuesday as investors wait to find out when the Federal Reserve will start raising interest rates. The Fed concludes a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday. Health care and utility stocks gained the most.
On Tuesday:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 100.83 points, or 0.6 percent, to 17,131.97.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 14.85 points, 0.8 percent, to 1,998.98.
The Nasdaq composite rose 33.86 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,552.76.
For the week:
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 144.46 points, or 0.8 percent.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13.44 points, 0.7 percent.
The Nasdaq composite lost 14.84 points, or 0.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 555.31 points, or 3.3 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 150.62 points, or 8.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 376.17 points, or 9 percent.
