A suddenly stormy month on the stock market came to a quiet end on Tuesday. Major indexes drifted to a slight loss, leaving the Standard & Poor's 500 down 1.6 percent for September, its third monthly drop this year.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 28.32 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,042.90.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 5.51 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,972.29.
The Nasdaq composite slipped 12.46 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,493.39.
For the week:
The Dow is down 70.25, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 10.56, or 0.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 18.80, or 0.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 466.24 points, or 2.8 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 123.93 points, or 6.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 316.80 points, or 7.6 percent.
