How the Dow Jones industrial average did Wednesday

U.S. stocks closed at a record as energy prices rebounded and as Republicans gained control of the Senate. The direction of the stock market has been dictated by swings in the price of oil this week. On Wednesday, oil rebounded on a smaller-than-expected increase in overall U.S. supplies.

On Wednesday:

The Dow rose 100.69 points, or 0.6 percent, to 17,484.53.

The S&P 500 index gained 11.47 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,023.57.

The Nasdaq composite fell 2.91 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,620.72.

For the week:

The Dow is up 94.01 points, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 5.52 points, or 0.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 10.02 points, or 0.2 percent

For the year:

The Dow is up 907.87 points, or 5.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 175.21 points, or 9.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 444.13 points, or 10.6 percent.
