1995 — The Golden State Warriors use a record-setting 3-point barrage in a 123-109 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors make 17 in all, one more than Houston made against Denver this season and Sacramento made against Golden State on Feb. 9, 1989.

1997 — Allen Iverson scores a career-high 50 points, for his fourth straight game with at least 40, as Philadelphia loses to Cleveland 125-118. Iverson breaks Wilt Chamberlain's rookie record of three consecutive 40-point games, set during the 1959-60 season.

1998 — Mark O'Meara wins the Masters with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole. O'Meara becomes the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1960 to win by closing with two consecutive birdies.

2000 — Karl Malone passes 2,000 points for the season during the Jazz's 102-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. It's the 12th time in his 14-year career that Malone reaches the milestone — more than any player in NBA history.

2005 — Smithtown (N.Y.) High School's co-ed badminton team defeats Miller Place (N.Y.) High School 10-5 to end Miller Place's 504-match win streak, the longest sports winning streak in U.S. history. For Miller Place, it is the first loss in the program's history, which began in 1973.

2007 — Kobe Bryant records his ninth 50-point performance of the season as the Los Angeles Lakers drop a 118-110 decision to the L.A. Clippers. Bryant's 50-point efforts are the most in a season since Wilt Chamberlain also had nine during the 1964-65 season playing with Philadelphia and San Francisco.

2008 — Nathan Gerbe, the nation's leading scorer, leads Boston College to the NCAA hockey championship with two goals and two assists in a 4-1 win over Notre Dame.

2008 — The United States wins its second women's world hockey championship, upsetting Canada 4-3 behind two goals from Natalie Darwitz.

2009 — Angel Cabrera becomes the first Argentine to win the Masters, beating 48-year-old Kenny Perry with a two-putt par on the second hole of a playoff.

2009 — In Hameenlinna, Finland, the United States wins its second straight women's World Hockey Championship title, beating Canada 4-1 behind defenseman Caitlin Cahow's two goals.

2013 — Guan Tianlang, a 14-year-old from China, makes history as the youngest player to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. Despite being the first player at Augusta National to get hit with a one-shot penalty for slow play, Guan makes the cut under the 10-shot rule at the Masters.

2014 — Union College wins its first NCAA hockey title, scoring three times in a 1:54 span in the first period in a 7-4 victory over Minnesota.

1914 — The first Federal League game is played in Baltimore with the Terrapins beating Buffalo 3-2 behind Jack Quinn.

1940 — The New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 to win the Stanley Cup in six games.

1940 — Dutch Warmerdam becomes the first man to clear 15 feet in the pole vault in a small track meet at Cal-Berkeley. Warmerdam, the last to set records with a bamboo pole, will have 43 vaults over 15 feet at a time when no other vaulter in the world clears 15 feet.

1957 — The Boston Celtics capture their first NBA championship as rookie Tommy Heinsohn scores 37 points and grabs 23 rebounds in a 125-123 double overtime victory over the St. Louis Hawks in Game 7.

1970 — Billy Casper wins the Masters with a five-stroke playoff victory over Gene Littler.

1972 — The first player strike in baseball history ends and the season is set to start April 15.

1980 — Seve Ballesteros, 23, becomes the youngest to win the Masters, with a four-stroke victory.

1984 — Pete Rose of the Montreal Expos collects the 4,000th hit of his career with a double off Philadelphia's Jerry Koosman in the fourth inning.

1986 — Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters for a record sixth time and at 46 becomes the oldest to win the event.

1997 — Tiger Woods wins the Masters by a record 12 strokes at Augusta National. Closing with a 69, Woods finished at 18-under 270, the lowest score in the Masters and matching the most under par by anyone in any of the four Grand Slam events.

2003 — Mike Weir becomes the first Canadian to win the Masters after the first sudden-death playoff in 13 years.

2006 — Brendan Shanahan records his 17th career hat trick and adds an assist as Detroit sets an NHL record with its 11th straight road win, 7-3 at Chicago.

2008 — Trevor Immelman handles the wind and pressure of Augusta National far better than anyone chasing him to win the Masters, the first South African in a green jacket in 30 years.

2012 — Martin Brodeur stops 24 shots for his 100th postseason win, and a three-goal first period is enough to help the New Jersey Devils spoil the Florida Panthers' long-awaited return to the Stanley Cup playoffs in a 3-2 victory. Brodeur also picks up an assist for his 10th postseason point, and becomes the second goalie in NHL history to reach triple-figures in playoff wins. Only Patrick Roy has more, with 151.

2013 — Jeff Malcolm stops 36 shots and Yale wins its first NCAA hockey championship with a 4-0 victory over top-seeded Quinnipiac.

2014 — Bubba Watson wins the Masters for the second time in three years. Watson claims another green jacket by shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round, fending off Jordan Spieth's bid to become the youngest major champion since 1931.

1928 — The New York Rangers beat the Montreal Maroons for the Stanley Cup, 3-games-to-2.

1931 — The Montreal Canadiens beat the Chicago Black Hawks 2-0 in the fifth game to win the Stanley Cup after trailing 2-games-to-1.

1948 — The Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup in four games as they beat the Detroit Red Wings 7-2.

1960 — The Montreal Canadiens win their fifth straight Stanley Cup with a four-game sweep of the Toronto Maple Leafs, including tonight's 4-0 victory.

1962 — Elgin Baylor of Los Angeles scores a record 61 points to lead the Lakers to a 126-121 triumph over the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals.

1968 — Bob Goalby wins the Masters when Roberto de Vincenzo of Argentina is penalized for signing an incorrect scorecard.

1985 — Bernhard Langer beats Curtis Strange, Ray Floyd and Seve Ballesteros by two strokes to win the Masters.

1991 — Ian Woosnam of Wales made a par putt to turn back Tom Watson on the last hole and capture the 55th Masters. Woosnam claimed his first major championship with an 11-under 277 total.

1991 — The Minnesota North Stars beat the Chicago Blackhawks in six games making Chicago the first regular-season champion in 20 years to lose in the opening round of the NHL playoffs.

1993 — The NHL's longest winning streak ends at 17 games as the Pittsburgh Penguins settled for a 6-6 tie with the New Jersey Devils on a late goal by Joe Mullen.

1994 — Seattle becomes the first team in NBA history to have 10 double-figure scorers in one game, as the SuperSonics beat the Los Angeles Clippers 150-101. All 12 Sonics score in the game and Steve Scheffler's layup with 8.4 seconds left makes him the 10th Sonic to score in double figures.

1996 — The Detroit Red Wings wrap up the winningest season in NHL history by defeating Dallas 5-1. The Red Wings finished with 62 victories, beating the 60 wins of the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens.

1996 — Greg Norman shoots a startling 78 in the greatest collapse in Masters history, giving Nick Faldo his third green jacket and sixth major championship. It's the sixth time Norman had taken a lead into the final round of one of the Grand Slam events only to lose.

1999 — John Franco strikes out the side in the ninth inning of the New York Mets 4-1 win over the Florida Marlins, becoming the second pitcher to reach 400 career saves.

2002 — Tiger Woods becomes the third player to win back-to-back Masters titles. He closes with a 1-under 71 to claim a three-stroke victory over Retief Goosen.

2006 — Kobe Bryant sets the Los Angeles Lakers' single-season scoring record with a flourish, getting 50 points to eclipse Elgin Baylor's long-standing total (2,719) in a 110-99 victory over Portland.

2010 — Oklahoma's Kevin Durant scores 31 points in a 114-105 win over Memphis to finish the season as the youngest scoring champion in NBA history. The 21-year-old Durant finishes with an average of 30.1 points, 0.4 ahead of LeBron James, to supplant 22-year-old Max Zaslofsky of the 1947-48 Chicago Stags.

2013 — Adam Scott becomes the first Australian to win the Masters, beating Angel Cabrera on the second hole of a playoff on a rainy day at Augusta National.

2013 — Dirk Nowitzki scores 19 points to become the 17th NBA player to surpass 25,000 career points and lead Dallas past New Orleans 107-89.

2014 — Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike is selected No. 1 by the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA draft, joining her sister Nneka, drafted by Los Angeles in 2012, as the only siblings to be chosen first in the league.

1918 — Babe Ruth pitched a four-hitter for Boston in the season opener and drove in two runs in a 7-1 win over Philadelphia.

1937 — The Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Rangers 3-0 to take the Stanley Cup in the fifth and final game.

1991 — Magic Johnson sets an NBA record for career assists in a 112-106 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Johnson, who needed nine assists to break Oscar Robertson's record of 9,887, gets 19.

1993 — Sparky Anderson earns his 2,000th victory as a manager as the Detroit Tigers rally to beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2.

1993 — Andre Dawson becomes the 25th player to hit 400 home runs as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3.

1995 — Glen Rice scores 56 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 123-117 victory over the Orlando Magic.

1998 — The first-ever AL-NL doubleheader is held in New York's Shea Stadium. The New York Yankees beat the Anaheim Angels 6-3 and the New York Mets edge the Chicago Cubs 2-1.

2000 — Cal Ripken becomes the 24th player to reach 3,000 hits when he lines a clean single to center off Twins reliever Hector Carrasco. He reaches the milestone with his third hit in a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins and becomes the seventh player in major league history to get 3,000 hits and 400 home runs.

2005 — Top-ranked Roger Federer's 25-match winning streak ends when French teenager Richard Gasquet saves three match points before capturing a third-set tiebreaker at the Monte Carlo Masters. Federer's 35-1 record this year is the best start on the men's tour since John McEnroe was 39-0 in 1984.

2005 — Two-time Olympic champion Steven Lopez of the United States wins his third world taekwondo title, capturing the welterweight gold medal with a 3-2 victory over Ali Tajik of Iran.

2007 — Kobe Bryant scores 50 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 109-98 win over Seattle, giving him 50 or more for the 10th time this season. It's the third-highest total in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain's 45 times with 50 or more in 1961-62, and Chamberlain's 30 times the following season.

1940 — Bob Feller of Cleveland defeats the White Sox 1-0 in the only opening day no-hitter in major-league history, at Chicago.

1992 — Mike Gartner of the New York Rangers gets his 500th career assist in a 7-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gartner becomes the first NHL player to record his 500th assist, 500th goal, 1,000th point and play in his 1,000th game all in the same season.

1995 — Utah's Tom Chambers scores 15 points in a 105-83 win over the Los Angeles Clippers to become the 20th player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points.

1997 — The Chicago Cubs set the mark for worst start in National League history, extending their losing streak to 12 with a 4-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Chicago breaks the overall NL record of 0-11 by the 1884 Detroit Wolverines.

2001 — Lee Bong-ju of South Korea wins the 105th Boston Marathon, snapping a 10-year victory streak for Kenya. Catherine Ndereba wins the women's race to make sure the Kenyans aren't shut out.

2003 — The Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 overtime victory, making the Red Wings the first defending Stanley Cup winner in 51 years to be swept the following season in a four-game opening series.

2005 — Phoenix's 116-98 victory over Sacramento ties the Suns with the 1979-80 Boston Celtics for the third-largest turnaround in league history at 32 games. The Suns' 29-53 record last season was the third worst in franchise history.

2007 — Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya wins the Boston Marathon for the third time, defending his title with a time of 2:14:13. Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva captures the women's race in 2:29:18.

2008 — Jason Kidd gets the 100th triple-double of his career with 27 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds in Dallas' 111-98 victory over New Orleans.

2008 — Golden State finishes the season at 48-34 after losing to Seattle 126-121. The Warriors have more wins than any team that failed to make the playoffs since the NBA expanded to the 16-team format in 1984. Houston held the previous mark of 45 wins in 2000-01.

2009 — Martin Havlat's goal at 12 seconds of overtime in Chicago's 3-2 victory over Calgary matches the third-fastest overtime goal in NHL playoff history.

2012 — Wesley Korir wins the Boston Marathon in a heat-slowed time of 2:12:40. Sharon Cherop wins the women's race to complete the Kenyan sweep, outsprinting fellow Kenyan Jemima Jelagat Sumgong to win in 2:31:50.

2013 — Two bombs explode in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 270 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs. Earlier in the day, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia wins the 117th edition of the marathon and Rita Jeptoo of Kenya wins the women's race.

1939 — Joe Louis knocks out Jack Roper at 2:20 of the first round in Los Angeles to retain the world heavyweight title.

1976 — Mike Schmidt hits four consecutive home runs and drives in eight runs as the Philadelphia Phillies overcome a 13-2 deficit to beat the Cubs 18-16 in 10 innings at Chicago's Wrigley Field.

1982 — The Denver Nuggets' Alex English, Dan Issel and Kiki Vandeweghe each average 20 points a game, the first front court to do so since Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan and Clyde Lovellette of St. Louis in 1961.

1987 — Julius Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers becomes the third player to score 30,000 points in his pro career. Erving scores 38 points to join Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

1989 — Abebe Mekonnen pulls away from Juma Ikangaa of Tanzania, the runner-up for the second consecutive year, with about 1½ miles left for a 48-second victory in the Boston Marathon.

1994 — Carl Lewis and his Santa Monica Track Club teammates rewrite their world record in the 800-meter relay at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays. Lewis, Mike Marsh, Leroy Burrell and Floyd Heard are timed at 1:18.68, breaking the record of 1:19.11 they had set on April 25, 1992.

1995 — Kenya's Cosmas Ndeti wins the Boston Marathon for the third straight year and Germany's Uta Pippig captures the women's title for the second consecutive year.

1995 — Wayne Gretzky reaches 2,500 career points when he sets up a power-play goal by Rob Blake in Los Angeles' 5-2 loss to Calgary.

1997 — The New Jersey Devils' Martin Brodeur becomes the second NHL goalie to score in the playoffs. Brodeur's empty net goal caps a three-goal third period that gives the Devils a 5-2 win and a 1-0 lead in a first-round series against Montreal.

1999 — Quarterbacks go 1-2-3 in the NFL Draft as Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith go to Cleveland, Philadelphia and Cincinnati — the first quarterback trifecta since 1971.

2001 — Barry Bonds becomes the 17th major leaguer to hit 500 home runs. Bonds' two-run, eighth-inning drive off Terry Adams leads the San Francisco Giants over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

2006 — Robert Cheruiyot sets a course record in the Boston Marathon as he and women's winner Rita Jeptoo pull off a Kenyan sweep. Cheruiyot, the 2003 champion, finishes in 2:07:14, one second better than the winning time fellow Kenyan Cosmas Ndeti had in 1994. Jeptoo pulls away with about 2 miles left, becoming the sixth Kenyan woman to claim the title in seven years.

2006 — Sidney Crosby, scores three assists in Pittsburgh's 6-1 win over the New York Islanders to become the youngest player in NHL history to score 100 points in a season. The 18-year-old becomes the seventh NHL rookie to reach the 100-point mark.

2009 — Bill Guerin scores his second goal of the game during a rare 5-on-3 power-play as Pittsburgh wins 3-2 against Philadelphia. The goal is the second 5-on-3 overtime tally in the playoffs since at least 1933.

2010 — Ubaldo Jimenez pitches the first no-hitter in the Colorado Rockies' 18-year history, dominating the Atlanta Braves in a 4-0 victory.

2011 — Memphis earns the first playoff victory in franchise history with a 101-98 win over top-seeded San Antonio. New Orleans stuns the two-time defending NBA champion and the No. 2 seed Los Angeles Lakers 109-100. The losses mark the first time the top two seeds lost the opening game.

2011 — Jimmie Johnson wins the Aaron's 499, edging Clint Bowyer by about a foot. The official margin of 0.002 seconds, ties for the closest finish in NASCAR Sprint Cup history.

2013 — The Miami Heat wrap up the regular season with a 105-93 win over Orlando. The Heat (66-16) becomes the 14th team in NBA history to finish with a winning percentage over .800. Orlando finishes with the NBA's worst record, 20-62.

2013 — The Charlotte Bobcats defeat Cleveland 105-98, to become the first team in NBA history to triple their win total from the previous season. Charlotte (21-61) finished last year's lockout-shortened season 7-59 and its .106 winning percentage was the worst ever.

2014 — Major League Baseball suspends Seattle Mariners first baseman Ji-Man Choi 50 games following a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance.

1908 — Tommy Burns knocks out Jewey Smith in the fifth round in Paris to retain the world heavyweight title.

1959 — The Montreal Canadiens win their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup with a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth game.

1962 — Boston's Bill Russell scores 30 points and grabs 40 rebounds to lead the Celtics to a 110-107 overtime win over the Los Angeles Lakers and their fourth consecutive NBA title.

1966 — Bill Russell is named the coach of the Boston Celtics to become the first African American head coach of an NBA team.

1967 — Rick Barry scores 55 points as the San Francisco Warriors beat Philadelphia, 130-124, in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

1987 — Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt hits his 500th home run with two outs in the ninth to rally the Phillies to an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium.

1988 — Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya battles past Juma Ikangaa of Tanzania in the final 100 yards to win the Boston Marathon by 1 second, the closest ever.

1991 — John Stockton breaks his own NBA single-season assist record as the Utah Jazz rout the Seattle SuperSonics 130-103. Stockton's 11 assists give him 1,136 for the season, two more than the record he set last season.

1994 — West Indian batsman Brian Lara completes a world record single-innings cricket score of 375, beating the 365 hit by countryman Sir Gary Sobers 36 years ago.

1996 — Dennis Scott makes an NBA-record 11 3-pointers to lead the Orlando Magic to a 119-104 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Scott, who hit 11 of 17 3s, finishes with 35 points.

1999 — Wayne Gretzky ends his NHL career at Madison Square Garden with an assist, setting up a second-period goal as his New York Rangers fall to Pittsburgh 2-1 in overtime. Before the game, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announces the league is retiring No. 99 in honor of "The Great One."

2001 — A.C. Green plays in his 1,192 consecutive game, which remains the NBA record. His streak began on November 19, 1986.

2005 — Defending champion Catherine Ndereba of Kenya becomes the first woman to win a fourth Boston Marathon and Ethiopia's Hailu Negussie wins the men's race to break the Kenyan stranglehold on the world's oldest annual marathon.

2006 — New Jersey closes out the season with its 11th straight victory, defeating Montreal 4-3 to win the Atlantic Division title. The Devils, who trailed division-leading Philadelphia by 19 points on Jan. 6, registers the biggest comeback to claim a division title since the league divided into two conferences with the 1974-75 expansion.

2007 — Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox faces the minimum 27 batters in a 6-0 no-hit victory over the Texas Rangers. Buehrle walks Sammy Sosa with one out in the fifth, then promptly picks him off first base.

2010 — Brian Davis calls a two-stroke penalty on himself on the first playoff hole to give Jim Furyk a victory at the Verizon Heritage.

2010 — Rafael Nadal defeats Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 in an all-Spanish final to win the Monte Carlo Masters for the sixth straight year. Nadal becomes the only player to win six consecutive titles in the same tournament since tennis turned professional in 1968.

2011 — Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai winsthe Boston Marathon in 2:03:02, the fastest anyone had ever run the 26.2 mile distance. Fellow Kenyan Caroline Kilel wins the women's race, outsprinting American Desiree Davila to win by two seconds, in 2:22:36.

2012 — With Pittsburgh on the brink of being swept, Jordan Staal scores a hat trick to lead the Penguins to a 10-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the first-round Eastern Conference series. The Penguins become the first team to score at least 10 goals in a playoff game since Los Angeles had 12 against Calgary in April 1990.

2014 — Memphis Grizzlies point guard Nick Calathes is suspended for 20 games for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy. Calathes tested positive for tamoxifen.
