Lady Gaga has released a music video for her new song “Til It Happens To You," co-written by Diane Warren, which also serves as the theme song for Kirby Dick’s campus rape documentary “The Hunting Ground.”
The music video/PSA, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, is almost as harrowing as the documentary itself, featuring a series of women suffering assaults on campus and then dealing with the traumatic aftermath. “One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes,” reads the text at the end of the video, quoting the oft-cited (and oft-disputed) statistic from a 2007 campus sexual assault study. A portion of the song’s proceeds will be donated to survivors of sexual assault.
Lady Gaga has long been an advocate for survivors, penning an open letter to New York governor Andrew Cuomo in June about the "epidemic of sexual violence” on campus and opening up about her own sexual assault at the age of 19.“We hope u feel our love & solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film,” Lady Gaga tweeted as a way of announcing the video.
