Former House Speaker and Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich went on Sean Hannity's radio show Thursday to explain that the Miss Universe controversy was a lie "as false as Benghazi." Following Monday night's debate in which Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton called out Trump's treatment of women, Gingrich has tried to clear up the issue by defending Trump's statements about Alicia Machado, by fat-shaming Machado with a group of Log Cabin Republicans on Wednesday, and then by joining Hannity on Thursday.
"I think as fascinating to look at how the elite media bought — this is the new Benghazi lie — what Hillary tried to set up, and what they spend apparently months preparing was an ambush that was as false as Benghazi. It was as false as her claim she was under fire in Bosnia. It was as false as the lies she told about her emails," said Gingrich on Hannity's show. Media Matters posted the audio from Hannity's show:
"I guess the issue of how to treat women is now front and center," said Hannity at the beginning of the clip, Bill Clinton's affairs with women including Monica Lewinsky and Juanita Broaddrick.
Hannity has been happy to open up the can of worms that Republicans don't want Trump going near.
Gingrich played defense for the GOP presidential nominee, calling him both "relatively positive" and "reasonable," and explaining that Trump was "trying to do a good job and trying and trying to make Miss Universe work as a business, and actually being very positive about Machado."
Hours later, early Friday morning, the reasonable businessman would go on a Twitter tirade to post his "positive" thoughts about the former Miss Universe:
Did Crooked Hillary help disgusting (check out sex tape and past) Alicia M become a U.S. citizen so she could use her in the debate?

On The Hannity Show website, the show recap reads, "Clinton has a lot of nerve claiming to be for women’s rights when her husband has done so much to offend and assault women over the years, with Hillary by his side."
