Rumor has it that the iPhone 8 will be something completely different!
It’s hard to say how reliable these reports are, especially since critics are craving something new after the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 7 all had basically the same design. Early reports suggested that the iPhone 8 would have a glass back with metal on the outer edges, an OLED screen which covers almost the entire face of the phone, and a home button and fingerprint scanner embedded beneath the screen. And a patent filing in August seemed to confirm the 8 would be a technological leap forward.
These changes would already be pretty major, but tech blogger Robert Scoble recently posted a Facebook letter that suggested alterations which — if true —would be nothing short of revolutionary. “The next iPhone will be, I am told, a clear piece of glass (er, Gorilla Glass sandwich with other polycarbonates for being pretty shatter resistant if dropped) with a next-generation OLED screen (I have several sources confirming this),” Scoble writes. He also describes a headset with eye sensors, the ability to put holograms on top of the real world, a next generation 3D sensor, and batteries and antennas hidden around the edges of the screen.
Part of this is Scoble predicting that mixed reality is the future of smartphone and other similar technologies. “Microsoft's execs already told me they are betting 100% on mixed reality (with its Microsoft HoloLens product). The strategy at Microsoft is "Cloud + Hololens." That's it. The entirety of a $455 billion company is betting on mixed reality,” he also wrote. “I'm quite convinced that most of us will be wearing mixed reality glasses three to four years from now, whether from Microsoft, Magic Leap, Apple, Amazon, Meta, or something from China (expect to see new brands evolve, just like DJI is now the biggest drone manufacturer).”
If Scoble is right, then the iPhone 8 will be more than just a few degrees removed from its immediate predecessors. It will be a truly groundbreaking product — the first under CEO Tim Cook.
