The expanding probe of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, now looking into President Trump's business interests, has the White House on high alert; particularly with the controversial Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Natalia Veselnitskaya still in the news.
"Who knows if the Trump Administration should be worried?" "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert opened on Monday. "Donald Trump does because, on Thursday, Trump and his legal team discussed his power to pardon those close to him . . . including himself."
"Mr. president, you should know, self-pardoning is a sin," Colbert joked. "How do you think justice went blind?"
In response, Trump went on the defense via Twitter on Saturday, shortly before arriving at his Sterling, Virginia golf club.
"While all agree the U. S. President has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when only crime so far is LEAKS against us.FAKE NEWS," Trump tweeted.

"What do you mean, "Why think of that?!'" Colbert asked incredulously. "You're the one tweeting about it! It's like someone going, 'We all agree I have the power to take herpes medication, but why think of that? Would you like to come upstairs?'"
"Also," Colbert added. "The only crime 'so far'? He's hedging a little bit. 'Your honor, I plead not guilty. So far.'"
