MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said Republicans were sealing their own doom in the midterms by fully embracing President Donald Trump.
The “Morning Joe” host pointed to the loss of Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) in a GOP primary, and the victory of anti-immigration hardliner Corey Stewart in Virginia, as the latest examples of Republican fealty to Trump.
“If you want to know where the Republican Party is right now, Mark Sanford survives career-ending, what should have been a career-ending scandal,” Scarborough said. “As governor, lies about going on the Appalachian Trail, becomes the butt of late-night jokes. Nobody said that guy would ever be elected back to Congress, and he won. Two years later he votes with Trump maybe 95 percent of the time, 87% percent, says one or two things about Trump that people don’t like.”
Scarborough said the outgoing lawmaker was hailed as a staunch conservative by the Freedom Caucus, but GOP primary voters followed Trump’s lead by voting Sanford out.
“It has devolved into a cult,” Scarborough said. “Primary voters in the Republican Party have devolved into a Trumpist cult.”
