The 2018 Emmy nominations are in and, in contrast to the Academy Awards, women of color were recognized across the board for their achievements in acting. Leading the pack was Sandra Oh, who made history as the first Asian woman to be nominated in the lead actress in a drama series category.

For their leading roles, Oh was nominated for outstanding actress in a drama series for her work on BBC America's "Killing Eve," while both Issa Rae of HBO's "Insecure" and Tracee Ellis Ross of ABC's "Black-ish" were nominated for outstanding actress in comedy series. Regina King, of Netflix's "Seven Seconds," was nominated for lead actress in a limited series or TV movie.

Other notable nominations for women of color included: Thandie Newton for supporting actress in a drama series HBO's "Westworld," Zazie Beetz for supporting actress in a comedy series for FX's "Atlanta" and Letitia Wright for supporting actress in a limited series or a TV move for Netflix's "Black Mirror."

But, while Rae and Oh were tapped for individual Emmys, their shows were left out of the nominations — two clear snubs.

The other biggest headline of the day was Netflix's triumph over HBO in the race for the most overall nominations from an individual creator, earning 112 nods to HBO's 108. Thursday marked the first time in 18 years that HBO has not lead the pack going into the awards ceremony. For its part, Netflix has notably more than tripled its Emmy nominations since 2015.

Even before the 70th Emmy nominations were announced, John Stankey, the longtime AT&T executive who recently became CEO of WarnerMedia, spoke to HBO employees about his future plans for the premium cable network. He "never uttered the word 'Netflix,' but he did suggest that HBO would have to become more like a streaming giant to thrive in the new media landscape," the New York Times reported. "To pull it off, the network will have to come up with more content, transforming itself from a boutique operation with a focus on its signature Sunday night lineup into something bigger and broader."

Given the outcome of this year's Emmy nominations, Stankey and those leading HBO forward after AT&T officially acquired Time Warner, could have a right to be concerned. However, HBO's "Game of Thrones" and "Westworld" were the two most-nominated dramas, with 22 and 21 nods, respectively. A drama from another streaming giant, Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale", trailed closely behind with 20 nominations.

With "Game of Thrones" was out of the running, the first season of "The Handmaid's Tale's" won big during last year's Emmy Awards. The two beloved series will face off this year, which raises questions if "The Handmaid's Tale" will again emerge victorious.

"Saturday Night Live," "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story," "Atlanta," "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Barry," "The Crown," "Jesus Christ Superstar Live," "Godless," "Stranger Things" and "GLOW" were also among the most-nominated shows.

With "Veep's" final season on pause as star Julia Louis-Dreyfus underwent cancer treatment, the lead actress in a comedy series field was opened up to an interesting mix of talent, including Rae and Ross. The category was rounded out by Pamala Adlon of "Better Things," Rachel Brosnahan of "The Marvelous Ms, Maisel," Allison Janney of "Mom" and Lily Tomlin of "Grace and Frankie." Louis-Dreyfus has won in the coveted category every year since 2012.

"Veep" also swept the award for outstanding comedy series for three years in a row, and even without the show in the running, a crowded field emerged, featuring "Atlanta," "Barry, "Black-ish," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Glow," "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Silicon Valley," and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt." "Atlanta" creator Donald Glover was triumphed during last year's Emmys, and the show is considered to be a frontrunner.

In the late-night category, the usual suspects are all there, save the conspicuously absent Seth Meyers. And, while John Oliver is expected to prevail – as he has over the last two years – Stephen Colbert could have an opening, as his show has risen to become the most-watched in the genre. There is also hope that, with Desus and Mero creating a new late-night show at Showtime next year, the Bronx natives will finally have a shot at a nomination.

Live from Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater, the 2018 Emmys ceremony be broadcast on NBC on Sept. 17. Here is the full list of 2018 Emmy nominations:
