Willie Nelson’s Tuesday visit to "The View" began with a derisive laugh at Trump’s base, which has suddenly and angrily discovered that the legendary pot-smoking country star supports Democrats. Nelson will headline a September 29 benefit concert for Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who is challenging conservative Republican Ted Cruz for Senate in what’s expected to be a tight and tough race.
“You’re making headlines yourself with your politics,” began co-host Joy Behar, noting Nelson’s support for the Democratic upstart. “People are shocked at that, that you would support a Democrat. Why? Why? Do they have some misunderstanding of you?
Nelson started laughing. “I guess so, because I’ve been supporting Democrats all my life,” he said. “I haven’t hidden it that much.” Indeed, Nelson’s politics have never been much of a secret. Besides being a prominent advocate for legal marijuana, he claims to have smoked pot on the roof of the White House when Carter was president. Nelson also spoke glowingly of both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election.
Behar asked if he was “getting a lot of flak”, which made the country star laugh even more. “I love flak,” he said. “We’re not happy til they’re not happy.”
As for any Trump supporters in the audience taking issue with his stance, Nelson had a blunt response: “I don’t care.”
