Iowa Republican Steve King’s God is apparently the same God of all those people who are certain He (and it’s always “He” for those people) is responsible for the performance of their favorite sports teams. Rep. King is hoping he reaches that level of fandom among his constituents, and God, and Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The Congress member and known racist has asked his constituents to pray for divine intervention to make McCarthy give him his committee assignments back.
No, this is not from The Onion. At a town meeting at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids, Iowa, King actually pleaded with the crowd to pray for McCarthy to “separate his ego from this issue and look at it objectively” and restore his committee assignments. Those assignments were removed when King’s racism finally became too big of a national headache for Republicans to continue to ignore. That’s when he wondered out loud to the The New York Times about why “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization—how did that language become offensive?”
No word from God yet on whether He’s going to take time out of his busy schedule overseeing high school basketball tournaments to talk to McCarthy.
