The Trump White House will instruct former White House counsel Don McGahn to defy a congressional subpoena issued by House Democrats.
In an interview with ABC News, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that she didn’t “anticipate” that the White House would let McGahn comply with Congress’s request for documents related to his testimony given to special counsel Robert Mueller. She also said that “we consider this to be a case closed, and we’re moving forward to do the work of the American people.”
Democrats had given McGahn until Tuesday to comply with their request for documents, but now it looks like that deadline will not be met.
McGahn told Mueller that Trump had twice ordered him to fire the special counsel, and then instructed him to lie about the president’s past orders regarding Mueller after they were made public by a report in the New York Times.
McGahn’s testimony is seen as crucial for determining whether Trump illegally tried to obstruct the Mueller probe, which is why Democrats have been trying to secure his testimony about what he told Mueller under oath and in public.
